History

Wychnor has been an important location for centuries having commanding views over the Trent Valley and Wychnor Bridges ( the bridges that cross the Trent ). Two important Roman Roads intersected nearby – Watling Street ( the A5 ) and Ryknield Street ( the A38 ) – and Ryknield Street had to cross the Wychnor Bridges. Hence there has always been a military post and therefore a village at Wychnor and nearby Alrewas.

It is believed that some of the earliest people to occupy Wychnor were the old British ” Hwicci Tribe ” and hence Hwiccenofre became, eventually, Wychnor. Since then the population of Wychnor has fluctuated throughout the years

St Leonards House is located next to St Leonards Church ( parts of which are 11th Century ) and near to the site of the original Wychnor Hall and the remains of a medieval village. Therefore it may be considered to be the centre of the village.

Formerly an estate workers cottage ( East End ), the village school ( centre ) and the schoolmistresses house ( east End ) and built in 1859 St Leonards House has been developed into a single residence with extensive facilities including stables and menage, swimming pool, gym, hot tub, koi pond, fountains and fields running down to the Trent and Mersey Canal complete with viewing platform there.

Wychnor is close to the National Memorial Arboretum, Lichfield City and many other Staffordshire and Derbyshire Places of Interest.
